Sextortion scam alert

Alert message sent 14/10/2021 21:51:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

We have recently been contacted by several victims of online ‘sextortion’ fraud, sextortion is a cyber-enabled crime which is on the rise.

Often run by organised crime gangs, they target victims by luring them into an online sexual relationship with someone they believe is genuine, but whose aim is to entrap the victim, tricking them into performing sexual acts in front of a webcam.

Unbeknown to the victim, their actions are recorded by the criminals involved, who will then use the video footage in an attempt to blackmail them.

Offenders typically threaten and make demands on the victim, usually to upload video recordings to the internet, and send the footage the victim’s family, friends and employer if their demands, usually for money, are not met.

If someone threatens to publish or share intimate images or videos of you if you do not meet their demands for money or goods, you are dealing with sextortion. If you are the target of online sextortion, here is what you should do:

1. Remain calm. Panicking or threatening the perpetrator may make matters worse.
2. Do not give in to the sextortionist’s demands to send them money.
3. Preserve all communications with the perpetrator, as well as identifying information (such as their Facebook account URL).
4. Maximize all privacy restrictions on your social media/ online accounts and disable all social media accounts you do not regularly use.
5. Report the sextortionist’s account by clicking their cover photo, selecting “Report Profile” and following the on-screen prompts.
6. Report the suspicious activity to Action Fraud https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/
