The Lord Mayor of the City of Chester expresses deepest sympathy to those affected by the attack in Christchurch, New Zealand.

15 March 2019

The Lord Mayor of the City of Chester has written to express deepest sympathy to those affected by the attack in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Councillor Alex Black has sent a letter to the Mayor of Christchurch on behalf of the people of Chester after at least 49 people were killed and at least 20 more seriously injured.

He said: Can I, on behalf of the City of Chester, England, express our heartfelt sympathy and extend our sincere condolences to all the victims, their families and those caught up by the tragic incident that occurred in Christchurch on Friday 15 March 2019.

It is with pain and sorrow that I write to express our condolences to the people of New Zealand, especially those affected by or caught up in the shootings at two mosques in your city. Words cannot express what the residents of your city must be feeling in these painful hours.

The City of Chester is united with you in your grief as your country comes to terms with what has happened. We, as a city and as a nation, will stand shoulder to shoulder with your country to both confront and ultimately defeat those who would wish to attack our liberty and freedom.

In Chester Town Hall today, a book of condolence has been opened and a candle lit in memory of those who lost their lives or were injured.

We owe our gratitude to your emergency services and to those members of the public who came to the aid of the injured and dying. This attack was utterly intolerable and such a cruel act against humanity.

Our thoughts are with those families in Christchurch and so many other countries across the globe who have lost family members and friends in terrorism attacks.
