Something for everyone during Health and Wellbeing Week at Cheshire West's Libraries

Libraries across the borough are supporting health and wellbeing during a special week of events, which will promote a range of activities to help people stay fit and well.

Health and Wellbeing week takes place between 16 and 21 January in libraries across Cheshire West and Chester.

Libraries will also be highlighting ‘One You’, a Public Health England Campaign which aims to encourage adults, particular those in middle age, to take control of their health to enjoy significant benefits now, and in later life.

So much of how we age is down to lifestyle so the choices we make today can decrease our risk of serious illnesses like type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer by as much as 60%.

One You can help you to move more, eat well, drink less alcohol and be smoke free. It also provides information to help you feel less stressed and sleep better.

Libraries are encouraging people to take the One You free ‘How Are You’ health quiz, to get personalised recommendations on how to make small changes to their lifestyle and habits for a positive effect on their future wellbeing.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Well-being, Councillor Louise Gittins said: “There are many ways that your local library can help you to stay fit and well – did you know that reading is the best way to relax, and reading for just six minutes a day can reduce your stress levels by more than two thirds?

“Our libraries will be hosting a range of activities, all designed to encourage people to try something new, keep active and connect with other people around them.  Many of libraries already hold regular activities, such as Scrabble Clubs, Adult Colouring and Craft sessions, Knit and Natter Clubs and Reading Groups but during Health and Wellbeing Week there will be the chance to try something different.” Just some of the activities include defibrillator training in Barnton Library, a dance and rhyme taster session with Cheshire Dance in Chester Library, yoga taster sessions at Sandiway Library, still life drawing at Winsford Library, an Arthritis Care Drop In at Helsby Library, a Wellbeing Coffee Morning at Little Sutton Library and an Action on Hearing Loss drop in at Ellesmere Port Library.

Cheshire West and Chester Libraries also support mental health and wellbeing through a range of Reading Well Books on Prescription, which are available to borrow free of charge. Some of the titles are also available as eBooks, through the Cloud Library. 

‘Shelf Help’ is the latest Books on Prescription Scheme, launched this year, and it provides 13 to 18 year-olds with high-quality information, support and advice on a wide-range of mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and self-harm, and difficult life pressures, like bullying and exams. 

Cllr Gittins added: “If you know someone who loves reading but can’t get to the library tell them to contact us and ask about our Home Library Service. We work in conjunction with the RVS to deliver books, large print books and talking books to elderly people who can’t visit the library.”

Health and Wellbeing week in the libraries coincides with the day of the year commonly known as Blue Monday; the day people feel their wellbeing is at its lowest and people can feel blue.  So Brio Leisure Cheshire Change Hub and Macmillan teams will also be on hand to support health and wellbeing week at Cheshire West libraries.

Their aim is to help everyone feel better and healthier by talking to people in libraries about the various support Brio Leisure can offer.  The Cheshire Change Hub offers a free weight management, 12 week exercise on referral programme and FREE 75+ membership, as well as support to stop smoking.  

The Brio/Macmillan team are offering exciting volunteering opportunities for volunteers to support people affected by cancer through health walks, information and listening and practical support such as shopping and gardening.

They will be bringing along a bike/juicer so there will be free fresh smoothies (juice) on offer for those who want to a quick workout on the smoothie bike! As well as lots of information for people wanting to lose weight, give up smoking or who want to access cancer related support or become a Brio volunteer and help to support people in West Cheshire communities feel better and happier!
