Volunteers in action at Northwich Woodlands this autumn

18 November 2019

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Greenspaces team has been working with a groups of volunteers to keep Northwich Woodlands in beautiful this autumn.

Volunteering opportunities are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, almost 52 weeks of year.  The projects centre around looking after the park, involving conservation or estate management.

Over the last few weeks volunteers have been involved in clearing viewpoints and footpaths, as well as creating wildflower havens on the sunny banks of Anderton Nature Park, views of Witton Brook and the bird hide at Haydn pool.  They have done a splendid job clearing the scrub to help wildflowers make the most of the sunshine next summer.

The Council’s Director of Place Operations, Maria Byrne, said: “The Council is very grateful to all the regular volunteers who roll up their sleeves to help us maintain our wonderful greenspaces across the borough.  Lots of work has taken place including hedge-laying and clearing areas for wildflowers to thrive next year.  Many thanks to everyone who has got involved to make a real difference in their community.”

The work to maintain the Northwich Woodlands supports the Council’s Climate Emergency agenda as it continues to work with partners, businesses and communities to develop a borough-wide response to tackle the Climate Emergency.

On top of this work, regular events have also taken place at Marbury Park.  The Marbury Art group recently held an exhibition of their work and were delighted to sell their very first painting.  The group holds classes at Marbury Park in the community room every Tuesday between 10am and 1pm – new members are very welcome.

Another group of volunteers and visitors recently made small wooden stools and tables. Everyone who took part enjoyed learning a new skill and participants took home their wonderful creations. This event held twice a year during the spring and autumn.

A full event programme for Northwich Woodlands in 2020 will be published in the next few weeks in conjunction with the Friends of groups at Marbury and Anderton.
