Council's Greenspaces team works with Disabled Ramblers to improve access in the Weaver Parkway

Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Greenspaces team has worked with the Disabled Ramblers to improve access for users of mobility scooters at the Weaver Parkway in Winsford.

The Disabled Ramblers is a small charity working across the country to help make the countryside more accessible to people with limited mobility. They also organise a national programme of rambles for people who use mobility scooters.

Barry Andrews, a local member of the Disabled Ramblers and a mobility scooter user, contacted the Council’s Greenspaces team to organise some on-site rambles for his group.

As a result of a site visit, an area was identified where the creation of a short section of footpath would provide a link to another, increasing the area of the site mobility scooter users can access.

Working with the Friends of Weaver Parkway group a link between the two footpaths was created last month and personally tested by Mr Andrews.

The Council’s Director of Place Operations, Maria Byrne said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to boost access to the Weaver Parkway for disabled visitors by linking these two routes.  I hope users of mobility scooters will now be able to visit the Parkway more regularly and enjoy one of our wonderful green spaces.”

Mr Andrews added: “It’s made a big difference to how much of the site is accessible on a mobility scooter.  I’m really pleased with the end result.  Many thanks to the Council and the Friends of Weaver Parkway for their help making this happen.”
